Membership is open to all independent theatre producers working in the UK who do not have a primary interest in the ownership or operation of any theatre. This is to protect any conflict of interest since a primary focus of League debate and discussion is producer relationships with venues.

All membership applications are signed off at Board level.

In your application, please provide a short summary of your work within the sector which will be submitted to the LIP Board for consideration. When considering new members, the Board tends to discuss whether producers are employing under Equity contracts and paying relevant Equity minima. This is not a formal requirement for membership but it is helpful for us to know.

It would also be helpful for applications if you can tell us if LIP membership was recommended by a particular member or how you heard about the League.

The membership fee per year is £200.  Membership is individual rather than organisational although we do allow members to send a delegate from their organisation to full LIP Members meetings.

The annual subscription payment is due by 31 January each year.  If the renewal membership fee is not paid by this date, you will be removed from the website.

For new members who join part way through the year, the first membership payment will be prorated to cover membership until the following January when it will be due for renewal.

The League also offers a Junior Membership programme for emerging and early-career producers. Please indicate in your application if you are interested in joining as a Junior Member.

LIP Benefits

• The League promotes the interests of independent producers working in the UK across London and on tour. This has recently included negotiations with venues regarding ticketing charges, levies and staff charges.
• The League liaises with the Society of London Theatre (SOLT) and UK Theatre to lobby for more transparent deal structures and relationships with venues. Actions have included drafting a new Deal Memo template that UK Theatre embedded into its Touring Handbook.
• Membership provides access to the online LIP Theatre Database through the League’s website, listing over 200 theatres across the country, including their capacities, tech specs, contact details and feedback from other independent producers who have taken work there.
• Members also receive up-to-date notifications and information regarding important issues such as venues struggling to make payments promptly, increased venue charges, hidden costs and a lack of transparency in venue agreements that independent producers should be aware of and that the League can take a position on.
• There are 12 meetings for members a year, held every four weeks via Zoom, to discuss any issues arising from the work of independent producers. You do not have to attend but the meetings provide updates and a chance to hear about the latest developments affecting independent producers. There are also regular guest speakers covering topics such as employment legislation.
• The League offers members a chance to network with other independent producers to share experiences, including two in-person members’ socials held each year.
